Terahertz communications represent a promising candidate for next generation wireless communication systems owing to the wider bandwidth that facilitates faster transmission and reception data rates. However, several obstacles exist before terahertz communications can be utilized widely, such as the lack of essential elements including high-power sources, efficient detectors as well as high gain THz antennas. High gain antennas are needed to maintain the received power and communication links. This book demonstrates the design and analysis of efficient THz antennas based on photomixer and resonant tunneling diodes (RTDs) THz sources. Photoconductive antenna utilizes a novel structure that is electromagnetically isolated from the supporting substrate to improve the impedance matching. The antenna-substrate decoupling has been accomplished using PBG and metal surfaces. Besides, a FSS superstrate can be applied to replace a bulky hemispherical lens for gain enhancement. In addition, an RTD-based THz DRA has been proposed by truncating the supporting substrate dimensions. Several DRA modes have been investigated for gain enhancement as well as practical feasibility.

Terahertz (THz) radiation lies between microwave (GHz) and far-infrared (far-IR) spectrum. The microwave radiation is well explored through electronics and the IR radiation is well studied through optics, the THz regime is the bridge filling the gap between the electronics and optics. Its generation and detection falls partially in both electronics and optics. The photon energy at 1 THz is 4 meV (equivalent to thermal energy at 48 K) which corresponds to excitation energy of vibrational modes of molecules. This photon energy is too low to excite the atomic transition (which usually requires photon energy of IR radiation) and it makes it a useful tool to characterize and perform non-destructive, non-contacting measurement on material. Transition from GHz electronics to faster computing requires deep understanding of the response of semiconductors or other candidate materials at THz range of frequency. Smaller the computers and integrated circuits comprise higher electric field (100 kV/cm) within the circuit. The two mentioned factors are the motivation of providing strong THz source of radiation to study the linear and nonlinear responses of the materials.

The terahertz (THz) region of the electromagnetic spectrum is one of the least developed spectral regions due to the limited number of sources, detectors, and devices available. However, many emerging applications have been identified. This work explores plasmon modes resonantly excited by THz radiation in double quantum well (DQW) field effect transistors with views of developing a tunable THz detector. The plasmon modes are probed as a function of gate voltage, temperature, frequency, in-plane magnetic field and polarization of the THz radiation. The samples used were DQWs patterned into mesas with a metal grating gate and ohmic contacts. We observe sharply resonant, voltage tuned THz photoconductivity that we can semi-quantitatively model by two dimensional standing plasma oscillations under the grating gate. The resonant frequency is directly related to the electron densities and the period of the grating. These results suggest that one could develop a fast, tunable THz detector based on two dimensional plasma oscillations of coupled DQWs. This work would be of interest for students, scientists and engineers interested in plasmon modes, THz technology and detection.
