The dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on nano crystalline TiO2 exhibit high power conversion efficiency one of the most commonly substitutes for low cost solar-energy-conversion devices at high temperature. ZnO is another promising metal-oxide semiconductor that can be replace TiO2 because of its higher electronic mobility as compared to TiO2 and its energy level of conduction band is similar as in TiO2. Nanocrystalline particles of ZnO were prepared by sol gel method using mesoporous electrodes for dye-sensitized solar cells. The anatase phase of ZnO has been confirmed using XRD. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) has been used to confirm the particle size of the ZnO nano particles. The coating of natural dyes extracted from spinach and marry gold has been done on ZnO nano particles. The Scanning Electron Microscope and EDX study reveals the morphology and elemental composition of the pure and natural dye coated ZnO nano particles. Tauc's plot confirmed decrease in band gap of ZnO nanoparticles with natural dye coating. Raman scattering spectra reveal active phonon modes for all of the synthesized samples. The natural dye coated nano particles are found to be better.

This book presents several theoretical, numerical and experimental studies in the field of plasmonics, which I carried out during my PhD. One basic problem in plasmonics is the study of optical Bloch modes of planar arrays of metallic nanostructures. Here a new finite-elements-based numerical approach for the modal analysis of such structures is described. Then I present a thorough investigation of the optical properties of a well-known plasmonic crystal, which is the 1-D lamellar grating. The focus here is the possible use of this structure as a light trapping device for photovoltaics applications. Another treated topic is plasmonic nanofocusing: an experiment involving metal-coated dielectric wedges is discussed. A similar structure is then studied for the implementation in an optoelectronic biosensor based on a high electron mobility phototransistor. Finally a class of particular nanostructures is addressed, termed as plasmonic vortex lenses, constituted by spiral and circular grooves on a gold surface, which are able to impress an arbitrary orbital angular momentum to the propagating surface plasmons.

Magnetic properties of NiO nanoparticles prepared by the sol-gel method in the size range D=5 nm to 20 nm, with and without oleic acid coating, are reported. For the coated and uncoated NiO nanorods of 5 nm diameter, variations of the magnetization M with temperature T (5 K to 370 K) and temperature variations of the EMR (electron magnetic resonance) spectra were measured to determine the respective blocking temperatures. For all the particles, measurements of M versus T in the zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) modes are used to determine the average blocking temperature Tp. For the OA coated particle, Tp increases with increase in size D as expected for superparamagnetic particles. However for the uncoated NP, Tp decreases initially with increase in size for D 10 nm, but for D 10 nm, Tp follows the same trend as for the coated NP. These differences are interpreted in terms of significant interparticle interaction.

Food contamination leads to wide economic loss and has a strong impact on public health worldwide.
